The 50

The Courageous 50

They are working,
The fifty,
To save their country
To prevent disaster.

They are risking,
The fifty,
Death and disease
To save the many.

They work endlessly,
The fifty,
To prevent the risk of
Nuclear meltdown.

We must not forget,
The fifty,
The courageous
Of Fukushima.

8.9

The ground quakes.
Buildings shake with ferocity.
The earth is torn apart beneath us.

Tsunami moves.
Relentlessly flowing overland,
Consuming all in its destructive path.

*Giant whirlpool.
Fills the screen as an eye,
With a boat as a dirt fleck near the centre.*

Panic ensues.
Man realises he is helpless
Against the angry power of the Earth.

*with thanks to Caitlin Moran ( @caitlinmoran) who's tweet inspired this.

Return

Crocus and snowdrops
Herald the change.
Daffodils to follow
Nests to arrange.
Lambs in the field,
The hope that they bring.
Time to acknowledge
The return of Spring.

All I see

Look at me what do you see?
A woman, a mother, a lover?
A daughter, a sister, an aunt?
A teacher, a carer, a worker?
A cook, a cleaner a nurse?
A poet, a crafter a witch?
All I see is me.

Who, what, where, why.

Who am I ?
Questions buzzing through my brain.
Where am I ?
Nothing looking twice the same.
What am I ?
Words going round, my head messing.
Why am I ?
Leaving me, myself guessing.

Just another go.

Let me have another go,
Just a fiver for the online bingo.
I'm bound to win at some point you know
Let me have another go.

Let me have another go,
Just a tenner for the online bingo.
I'm bound to win at some point you know
Let me have another go.

Let me have another go,
Just a twenty for the online bingo.
I'm bound to win at some point you know
Let me have another go.

Let me have another go,
I won 50p, I told you so.
I'll win more at some point you know
Let me have another go.

No one

I cry for help,
In the dark,
But no one is coming.
They have gone,
They are not there.
All have left.
I am alone.

One

One to help me sleep,
One to wake me up.
One to get me going,
One to slow me down.
One for the nausea,
One for the migraine.
One to solve the side effects
Of one of the others.

Stolen

He stole it.
With soft words
And a silver tongue.
I was left,
Abandonded.

For Dean and Ali

The picture is finally complete.
Joining of hearts
Sharing life and love.
Perfect halves, making perfect whole.

He

He sits there,
A shadow,
Invisible.
No communication,
No movement ,
No independence.
Spoken about,
Spoken at,
Never to.
Things get done,
He cannot "do".
His life is lived,
But he has no life.
He has no voice,
He is trapped,
In crowded isolation.

Pain

Four letters
That continually
Drive me insane..

PAIN.

The point is?

Why
Do we think
That spending money
On useless items
Is good?

Why
Is buying
The latest gadget
More important
Than food?

Why
Do I see
After Christmas Season
Unwanted gifts
Discarded?

What
Is the point
Of indebtment
For a day
Of excess?

Wedding woe*

Who would be
A bride today
With all the fuss and stress

Family guests
Who do nothing more
Than bitch about the dress

With parents who
invited Aunty Jane
to come from Timbuktu

Don't seat her there
Can you imagine the looks
Between her and Aunty Sue?

There is family small
and family large
Look there is Cousin Dick

Oh my Gods
There is Little Maisie
I think she's going to be sick!

The band I think
Are all of key
I think the singer must be drunk

They were booked as Celtic
But I think they are playin
Some Philadelphia Funk

Thank goodness for that
No one has noticed
I think it's time we disappear

We'll sneak away
Before they see us
And live happy  many a year.

* this was written for a dear friend Geraldine who was getting married and was spending way too much time worrying about it.

As you lay

As you lay dying at my feet
The blood gushing from your wounds
I looked back on the days gone by
The future that was the past
I remembered days of sunshine
Of happiness and joy
Of a shy teenage girl
And a very nervous boy

Those days were the happiest
Tell me, when did it all change?
When did lad become a monster
With his demons he had to fight?
The days they passed so slowly
With every drink and blow
With every bruise and lump
Which I could never show

The drinking it never ended
The abuse, the punches and fights
So many doors to walk into
So many soul destroying days
It got too much my darling
Once too often you did try
I snapped and picked up the sharp knife
I stabbed you, and now, you die

Cars

Quiet of a friday morning
Cars thunder
Shattering the peace

Pain

Pain and fatigue creeps up on me
With great stealth
Like hunters after prey

Insomnia

She lays there awake with eyes closed
Listening to the constant tick tock tick.
Listening to him breathe in and out,
She lies there unable to sleep.

She watches the clock digits changing
one by one, minute by minute.
She is waiting patiently,
Waiting for the slumber deep.

She hears the ghosts of night,
Cars, dog walkers and drunks
Passing by the window.
Still there is no sleep.

She lies there thinking
Is this what it is like?
Torture? Deprivation?
Still there is no slumber deep.

She lays there awake with eyes closed
Listening to the constant tick tick tick.
Listening to him breathe in and out,
She lies there still unable to sleep.

Xmas shopping

Traffic queues
Tills are ringing
Empty purses
Drunks singing

Children screaming
Lights too bright
Unguarded handbags
Pickpocket's delight

Harassed workers
Angry drivers
Tired shoppers
School skivers

Xmas shopping
I regret
I'll stay at home
